Curiosity rover discovers polygons on Mars
NASA's Mars rover Curiosity has discovered polygon-shaped features in the 'Monte Grande' boxwork hollow. The rover captured a close-up image of the features using its Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI) on December 11, 2025.
The team plans to analyze the composition of the bedrock in the hollow and take high-resolution images of the walls. They will also conduct a super-sized MAHLI mosaic to support three-dimensional modeling of the surfaces.
The discovery of the polygons is significant, as similar patterns have been seen in various strata in Gale Crater before. The team is interested in the relationship between the fracture-filling material and the polygonal surface.
