Hawaii floods cause damage
Back-to-back low-pressure systems struck Hawaii in March 2026, causing severe flooding. The storms, known as kona lows, brought heavy rainfall and strong winds, resulting in significant damage to homes and farmland.
Satellite images from NASA's Landsat 9 show the extent of the flooding on the island of O'ahu. The images, taken on January 25 and March 14, 2026, reveal a significant change in the landscape, with floodwaters pooling in neighborhoods and farmland, and a plume of sediment spreading into the coastal ocean.
The National Weather Service reported rainfall totals of 5 to 10 inches throughout the state, with some areas receiving over 30 inches. The storms also produced widespread wind gusts, with some areas experiencing gusts of up to 100 miles per hour.
Preliminary assessments indicate that hundreds of homes were damaged, and farmers reported millions of dollars in damage. NASA's Disasters Response Coordination System has been activated to support the response efforts.
