Eager to capture amateur video of the edge of Earth's atmosphere for a major school project, Shawn constructs a homemade weather balloon equipped with a custom camera shuttle. But when they launch their device into the clouds, the footage they capture yields something far more shocking than just the curve of the Earth—unmistakable proof of extraterrestrial life. Meanwhile, their sleepy hometown begins to experience a series of chilling, unexplained phenomena. Local livestock are mysteriously wiped out, a prominent farmer completely vanishes into thin air after being hunted by a tall stranger, and an aggressive military unit suddenly occupies an abandoned local base without notifying the town's sheriff—who also happens to be the boys' protective father.
