3i/ATLAS: interstellar comet details
3i/ATLAS, an interstellar comet, has been imaged by the most powerful telescope in orbit. The images show a blob with no detail, as expected for a small object. The comet's size is estimated to be between 0.2 and 28.5 miles in diameter, with current estimates closer to the upper limit. Its path is aligned with the galactic disk, and it will pass by Mars, Venus, and Jupiter.
The comet's composition includes Carbon Dioxide, water ice, water vapor, and Carbon Monoxide. Its age is estimated to be around 7 billion years, and its speed is approximately 137,000 miles per hour. The closest approach to Earth will be about 170 million miles on December 19, 2025.
According to MUFON, the comet's trajectory is hyperbolic, meaning it will not be gravitationally bound to the Sun. The images of 3i/ATLAS were taken by the James Webb Telescope and the SkyTour LiveStream Benson Arizona telescope system.
