1918-1939 is sometimes called "the golden age of aviation", because a lot of technological progress made in aircraft design. With World War II came better, faster airplanes and more experienced pilots. From the moment the war was over, air travel still firmly in the world. The sky was the way of the future. People began to look with curiosity. What they saw in the sky was sometimes banal, but sometimes surprising. UFO era began.
In the early 1950s saw an increase of civilian UFO reports. So serious was the problem becomes normal intelligence that measures were the CIA is seriously affected. The authorities were worried that if the Soviet Union and other opponents of trying to penetrate the United States, would clog the pipes and the government would not be able to act so serious hysteria had become UFOs. Obviously, something had to be done.
The CIA responded by forming a committee for the thousands of UFO to study and choose a course of action. The committee, which was led by Howard Percy Robertson under the panel called Robertson to be known. Robertson was an important physicist, a CIA employee, and a director of the Defense Department Weapons Evaluation Group. He moved to six friends and colleagues of scientific importance to fill the panel. Some of the most famous scientists on board, Luis Alvarez, the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1968, and Samuel A. Goudsmit, the head of a department in the Manhattan Project was, and together the theory of electron spin. The other members were Frederick C. Durant, missile experts, Thornton Page, astrophysicist, Lloyd Berkner, physicist, and Allen Hynek, astronomer.
From the outset, the panel against the idea of UFOs has been partial. In their first briefing, Robertson explained that their purpose was to debunk "UFOs. At least one committee member, Thornton has been the site for its "excessive levity reprimanded. "It also has some criticism that, while scientists on the panel are leaders in their respective fields, these scientists specialized in space. Were not consulted scientists who have expertise in atmospheric conditions, ie, when it must be seen a UFO.
The panel met in secret for four consecutive days. During that time, considered two amateur films in 1950, Montana and Utah, 1952 UFO film, which had already suffered a 1000 work for the detailed analysis of the Naval officers, who had concluded that the objects represented in any aircraft not were known, creature, or Weather phenomenon. Air Force Captain Edward J. Ruppelt and Major Dewey J. Fournet then went to Control Panel, which involves the synthesis of a large job that was with her in the field of UFO over the past years. Finally, the jury awarded twelve hours examining the reports and investigation Project Blue Book and other committees had studied for years. Soon found "explanations" for relationships. If there was no solution to be found, that the case swept under the carpet.
The Panel Robertson wasted no time in formulating their official report. They found that 90% of UFO phenomenon could easily meteorological, astronomical, or natural, and if the remaining 10% could be explained with detailed study. He also indicated that such a study would be a waste of time. Their final recommendation is "that the national security agencies take immediate steps to strip the Unidentified Flying Objects that have received the special status and aura of mystery which, unfortunately, has acquired. "
Based on the recommendations of a committee of public relations has been assembled, the public interest in UFOs reduced. Believers subscribe to such notions as were portrayed as stupid and irrational. This effort was based on the resources of renowned scientists and personalities, and means of mass communication. The Disney Corporation has been influential in the effort of scaling. From that point on UFO was seen at discrediting scientific circles, and UFOs have become a topic of border communities.
Finally, according to the committee's proposals, the groups studying UFOs were tracked by government agents and spies in order to influence them to keep thinking of the masses. As late as 1976, a note was discovered the CIA told to report how the agency was still with the activities of UFO groups.
In subsequent years the group Robertson least two members expressed disappointment about the procedure. Based on the conclusions of the panel, the focus needed to determine the data, including the nature of the UFO phenomenon was not allowed to purchase the item. Thornton Page and J. Allen Hynek, both complained that the issue has not been treated with more seriousness. While interest liabilities denominated Page Hynek went to a scientifically respected voice in ufology.
There can be no doubt that the group Robertson opened the era of government cover-up regarding the UFO phenomenon. Yet, the credibility and respect, there are those who are there to share their experiences. Whatever the cost, there are those who are curious to look to the sky.
