Astronauts capture photo of frozen channels in northern Canada
Astronauts on the International Space Station captured a photo of frozen channels feeding Hannah Bay in northern Canada. The photo reveals the region's subtle topography, with patterns related to its ice age history.
The Laurentide Ice Sheet covered most of present-day Canada during the Pleistocene Epoch, centering on Hudson Bay. Since the Last Glacial Maximum, the ice has retreated, and the land has been bouncing back through glacial isostatic adjustment.
The process has left a fingerprint on the newly emerged land, with faint, closely spaced ridges parallel to the shore of ice-covered James Bay. These beach ridges formed from tidal action reworking sands and silts along the shore.
